Storm Types

Tropical Depression: sustained winds of 38 mph or less.
Tropical Storm: sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph.
Hurricane: sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.
Major Hurricane: sustained winds of 11 mph or higher, a major hurricane corresponds to a Category 3, 4, or 5 storm.

Property Preparation

Take all necessary steps to secure your property.  Remove all outdoor items that are not secured to the ground including furnishings hoses, trash cans and pool supplies.  Flying objects can cause serious damage and injury.  Store items in your garage or inside.  If you plan to cover your windows with hurricane shutters or plywood, start early.  If the storm is to produce flooding, Pasco County may open sandbag locations.  If you have a pool, yo may want to consider draining some water.  

Supplies

Stock up on emergency supplies for at least 72 hours.  Plan for longer if you can to make certain you and your family have all the necessities. 

Items to Consider Include:

• Water – at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days
• Food – at least enough for 3 to 7 days
• Non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
• Foods for infants or the elderly
• Snack foods
• Non-electric can opener
• Cooking tools / fuel
• Paper plates / plastic utensils
• Blankets / Pillows, etc.
• Clothing – seasonal / rain gear/ sturdy shoes
• First Aid Kit / Medicines / Prescription Drugs
• Special Items – for babies and the elderly
• Toiletries – hygiene items
• Moisture wipes
• Flashlight / Batteries
• Radio – Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
• Cash – Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended periods
• Keys
• Toys, Books and Games
• Important documents – in a waterproof container – insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security card, etc.
• Document all valuables with videotape if possible
• Tools – keep a set with you during the storm
• Vehicle fuel tanks filled

Pet Care Items:

• Proper identification / immunization records
• Ample supply of food and water
• A carrier or cage
• Medications
• Muzzle and leash

Prior to the Storm

Stay alert to the latest forecast, evacuations recommendations, and shelter locations.

Situations change in developing storms, so continue to heed warnings and changes by the local authorities especially when deciding to evacuate.  

During the Storm

Remain inside the most secure building and stay away from windows.  Wait for authorities to announce the storm has passed, lulls in the system may be related to breaks in the rainbands and/or the storm's eye

Post Storm

Venturing outside following a storm can be extremely dangerous.  Avoid stepping in standing water.  Look for down power lines and stay far away.
